GRAVITY SEWAGE SYSTEM USING DEEP TUNNELING
Sewage once used to be lift up from the invert level using intermediate pumping stations.
Limited resources and less advancement in technology caused the pumps to be installed in the
middle of city.
Now, with the urbanization many challenges have to be faced regularly to keep the system of
sewage flow smooth.
PROBLEMS WITH INTERMEDIATE PUMPING STATIONS
- Unpleasant Odor
- Pumps Capacity
- Stand by power generation required for the optimum flow capacity
- Maintenance & Operations Supervision
RISKS CONNECTED TO FORCE MAIN PIPE
- Open Trench
- Disturbance to other utilities
- Toxicity
- Security
- Water Hammer Effects
DEEP TUNNELLING
THE BEST SOLUTION FOR GRAVITY SEWERS
Since last 20 years Trenchless Tech. made it possible to install utilities without digging.
With Micro-tunnelling or Pipe Jacking techniques sewer lines can be installed in depths
exceeding 100m
Many cities have adopted this way to and rely on this technology where pumping station is
installed at the treatment plant.
However, pressurized sewer shall be considered as a supplemental tool for collecting
wastewater and not as a replacement for the conventional gravity collection system
ADVANTAGES OF DEEP TUNNELLING
- No open Trenches
- No need of small diameter tunnels
- Extra construction work is avoided
- Operation and Maintenance costs are comparatively lower
- Long term serviceability
- It can maintain minimum velocity at design flow
- Environment friendly
- These large diameter tunnels can also be used to store sewage during in case of any failures in treatment plants.
ADVANTAGES OF PUMPING STATION AT THE TREATMENT PLANT
- Easy operation and maintenance. Operation and maintenance can be concentrated at the waste water treatment plant. Hence reduction in operation costs
- Safety is enhanced
- Toxic and foul gases cause no nuisance to residents
- No frictional loses as in the case of force mains
- Less employees needed at the pumping station. Hence easier service for 24/7
